The Dondorfer See is located in the Sieg Valley near the town of Hennef and the town of Blankenberg. It was created by gravel removal work in the area of a Sieg backwater and is currently designated as a nature reserve. Its area is 20 hectares.
In the summer of 2008, a 24 m2 plastic raft was fixed in the lake by the Federal Government for the Environment and Nature Conservation. With its gravel layer, it is intended to provide an artificial breeding ground for seagulls and common terns. There are only eight colonies of the latter in North Rhine-Westphalia with 130 breeding sites, since they only breed on gravel islands, which are rare here.
